Paragliding

Kamshet: It is 125 kms from Mumbai and 65 kms from Pune. Paragliding is a fun, safe way to experience flight in its simplest form. Once in the air, a pilot is able to maintain and even gain altitude using lifting air currents and thermals. Landing a paraglider is extremely easy. A pilot simply steers it into the landing area, and glides down for a very gentle touch down back on to earth.

White Water Rafting: India is yet to earn the reputation of being among the best places for river rafting. But it offers a series of some of the most outstanding river journeys in the world. The Himalayan mountain terrain that draws trekkers and climbers from all over the world. A good combination of beautiful scenery, spectacular rivers and a rich cultural diversity makes India an obvious river runner’s destination.

Travinfoindia arranges white water rafting trips on Ganges flowing through the Garhwal region.

White water rafting in India is almost exclusively confined to the northern rivers which flow southwards from the Himalayas, gushing between densely forested mountains and through steep gorges. There are rivers such as the Alaknanda, Bhagirathi, Indus, Zanskar and Teesta which offer the ultimate thrills not to be forgotten. You should be as old as over 14 years of age- to book on river rafting trips. There are some basic trips, which pass through quieter waters for which it is not necessary to know swimming. Although if you can not swim may not be allowed on certain stretches of the river. Moreover, expectant mothers and people suffering from epilepsy or other serious ailments are not allowed.

The Himalayan Rivers, being the main river rafting routes, are virtually inaccessible during the winters. Some, like the Zanskar, are frozen and most of the others are too cold to allow rafting. The monsoon brings heavy rain to the lower reaches of the Himalayas, and melting snows in the mountains result in high water flows in the rivers. That is why summers are the good time to go river rafting, but it can be a little unsafe, especially for novices. It is advised for the beginners or novices that August and September are the best months to go river running; when waters are lower and more manageable. However, veterans can opt for expeditions earlier in the summer. Moreover, spring or early summer is usually suitable for river running.

Accommodation

Riverside tent camps exist along all the main routes, especially in Garhwal. These will generally consist of Swiss tents where accommodation is on a shared basis, with separate dry-waste toilet tents. All camps have their own arrangements for dining and entertainment- the latter invariably consisting of bonfires, beach volleyball and singing. Some of the longer runs may include stops en route at riverside villages or other settlements.

Important

River rafting in some areas may require special permits from the government. Areas close to India’s international borders, such as Nubra, Sikkim, Lahaul and Spiti may be off-limits to foreigners without a valid permit.

Rafting Runs

There are two main sets of routes along the rivers, graded I to III (for amateurs) and IV to VI, for veterans. The Zanskar and the Indus, both in Ladakh, are graded I – III, while the more southern stretches of the Beas, Chenab, Sutlej and Teesta are graded IV – VI. Briefly,

Grade I: Small, easy waves; mainly flat water

Grade II: Mainly clear passages; some areas of difficulty

Grade III: Difficult passages; narrow in places and with high waves

Grade IV: Very difficult, narrow and requiring precise manoeuvring

Grade V: Extremely difficult. Very fast-flowing waters which can be manoeuvred only by experts

Grade VI: For all practical purposes, unmanageable- even suicidal

The Ganga and its tributaries; the Kali Ganga, the Indus, the Zanskar, the Teesta and the Rangeet are some of the rivers on which river running has been developed. Most of these have good riverside camps, and are well-frequented by organized rafting groups during peak season.

CAMEL SAFARIS

The Camel safari can be experienced in the desert state of Rajasthan, India. Rajasthan is India’s western most state, is the very essence of exotic India- barren desert and drifting sand dunes.

Most of the camel safaris are organized in the winter. The best season to enjoy the same is from November to March. Jaisalmer is the place from where most of the camel safaris start. Jaisalmer is connected by air, train and road. The camel-safari towns in Rajasthan are Bikaner, Mandawa and Jaisalmer.

Elephant Safari

In the North and the North East India elephant safari makes the best option of exploring the wildlife sanctuaries and national parks, especially the ones that are located in the Himalayan region. If you have gone to some national parks of the state and ridden an elephant in search of a tiger, then you would be quite aware of the immense versatility of this majestic animal in negotiating the difficult Himalayan terrain that even a jeep will not traverse. Why not an elephant for a long ride, covering days? Well, in the Himalayan forest regions you can do it, especially in national parks such as Corbett in Uttaranchal and Kaziranga in Assam.
