Lake Vembanad is Kerala’s largest body of water dominates the Backwaters; it lies between Alappuzha and Kochi and is more than 200 km² in area. The most important of Kerala’s forty-four rivers include the Periyar (244 km), the Bharathapuzha (209 km), the Pamba (176 km), the Chaliyar (169 km), the Kadalundipuzha (130 km), the Valapattanam (129 km) and the Achankovil (128 km). The “backwaters” region, which comprises an extensive network of interlocking rivers, lakes, and canals that center on Alleppey, Kollam, Kumarakom, and Punnamada (where the annual Nehru Trophy Boat Race is held in August). Heritage sites such, as the Padmanabhapuram Palace and the Mattancherry Palace are also popular. Cities such as Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram are popular centers for their shopping and traditional theatrical performances. During early summer, the Thrissur Pooram is conducted that attracts foreign tourists who visit here for the charm of decorated elephants, celebration and festival. The main pilgrimages of Kerala include Sabarimala Temple, Chettikulangara Temple, Vadakumnathan Temple, Guruvayoor Temple, Malayattor Church and Parumala Church.

Munnar, Kerala: It is a famous hill station of Kerala wedged between the Lakshadweep Sea and the Western Ghats. It has the humid equatorial tropic climate. The state has a coast of length 590 kms. Anamudi is the highest peak at an elevation of 2,695 meters (8,130 ft).

Among the almost 4,000 flowering plant species are 900 species of highly sought medicinal plants. Its 9,400 km² of forests include tropical wet evergreen and semi-evergreen forests.

Kerala’s music also has ancient roots. Carnatic music dominates Keralite traditional music. Elephants are an integral part of daily life in Kerala. These Indian elephants are loved, revered, groomed and given a prestigious place in the state’s culture. The predominant language spoken in Kerala is Malayalam. DuringOnam, Keralites create floral pookkalam designs in front of their houses.

The culture of Kerala is derived from both a Tamil-heritage region known as Tamilakam and southern coastal Karnataka. Later, Kerala’s culture was elaborated upon through centuries of contact with neighboring and overseas cultures. Its native performing arts include koodiyattom (a 2000 year old Sanskrit theatre tradition, officially recognised by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity), kathakali—from katha (“story”) and kali (“performance”)—and its offshoot Kerala natanam, Kaliyattam -(North Malabar special), koothu (akin to stand-up comedy), mohiniaattam (“dance of the enchantress”), Theyyam, thullal NS padayani. Both Kathakali and Mohiniattam are the widely recognized two Indian Classical Dance traditions from Kerala. Traditional dress of Kerala consists a set-sari for Malayali woman and Malayali man wears mundu with a shirt. Jainism has a considerable following in the Wayanad district. Buddhism was dominant at the time of Ashoka the Great but vanished by the 8th century CE. It has witnessed significant migration of its people, especially to the Persian Gulf countries. Other forms of art are more religious or tribal in nature. These include chavittu nadakom, oppana that combines dance, rhythmic hand clapping, and ishal vocalisations. Margam Kali is one of the ancient round group dance practiced by Syrian Christians of Kerala. However, many of these art forms largely play to tourists or at youth festivals, and are not as popular among most ordinary Keralites. These people look to more contemporary art and performance styles, including those employing mimicry and parody.

Goa has an area of 3,702-km² and population of 1.344 million residents, making it India’s fourth smallest state (after Sikkim, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh). It is India’s richest state with a GDP per capita. It was ranked the best placed state by the Eleventh Finance Commission for its infrastructure and ranked on top for the best quality of life in India by the National Commission on Population based on the 12 Indicators. The historic city Margao exhibits the cultural influence of the Portuguese, who first landed in the early 16th century as merchants and conquered it. The Portuguese overseas territory existed for about 450 years; until it was annexed by India in 1961. It is renowned for its beaches, places of worship and world heritage architecture that is visited by large number of international and domestic tourists. It also has rich flora and fauna, owing to its location on the Western Ghats range, which is classified as a biodiversity hotspot. The state is divided into two districts: North Goa and South Goa. Panaji is the headquarters of the North Goa district and Margao of the south district. Its major cities include Vasco, Margao, Mormugao, Panaji and Mapusa. Football is the most popular sport in Goa and is embedded in Goan culture.

The Portuguese converted a large portion of their subjects in Goa to Christianity. The British between 1812 and 1815 occupied it during the Napoleonic Wars. In 1843 the capital was moved to Panjim from Velha Goa. By the mid-18th century the area under occupation had expanded to form the present day Goa. After India gained independence from the British in 1947, Portugal refused to negotiate with India on the transfer of sovereignty of their Indian enclaves. On 12 December 1961, the Indian Army commenced with Operation Vijay resulting in the annexation of Goa, Damman and Diu into the Indian union. Goa, along with Daman and Diu was made into a centrally administered Union Territory of India. On 30 May 1987, the Union Territory was split, and Goa was made India’s twenty-fifth state, with Daman and Diu remaining Union Territories.

Most of Goa is a part of the coastal country known as the Konkan. It has a coastline of 101 km. The main rivers include the Mandovi, the Zuari, the Terekhol, Chapora River and the Sal. The Mormugao harbour on the mouth of the River Zuari is one of the best natural harbors in South Asia. The Zuari and the Mandovi are the lifelines of Goa. These rivers are one of the busiest rivers in India. It has more than forty estuarine, eight marine and about ninety riverine islands. The total navigable length of rivers is 253 km. Goa, being in the tropical zone and near the Arabian Sea, has a hot and humid climate for most of the year. The month of May is the hottest, day temperatures of over 35 °C (95 °F) coupled with high humidity. The monsoon arrives by early June and provides relief from the heat. Most of the annual rainfall is received through the monsoons, which last till late September. It has a short winter season between mid-December and February. The average temperature in December is between 20 °C (68 °F) to 29 °C (84 °F) with moderate humidity.

The Western Ghats, which forms most of eastern Goa, has been internationally recognized as one of the biodiversity hotspots of the world. In the February 1999 issue of National Geographic Magazine, it was compared with the Amazon and Congo basins for its rich tropical biodiversity. The wildlife sanctuaries boast of more than 1512 documented species of plants, over 275 species of birds, over 48 kinds of animals and over 60 genera of reptiles. The State has a rich forest cover of more than 1,424 km². Goa’s state animal is the Gaur, the state bird is the Ruby Throated Yellow Bulbul, which is a variation of Black-crested Bulbul, and the state tree is the Asan. Goa’s forests are rich with medicinal plants. Coconut trees are ubiquitous barring the elevated regions. Goa has many famous National Parks, including the renowned Salim Ali bird sanctuary.

Goa has two World Heritage Sites; the Bom Jesus Basilica and a few designated convents. The Basilica holds the mortal remains of St. Francis Xavier, regarded by many Catholics as the patron saint of Goa (the patron of the Archdiocese of Goa is actually the Blessed Joseph Vaz). Once every twelve years, the body is taken down for veneration and for public viewing. There are many forts in Goa such as Tiracol, Chapora, Corjuem, Aguada, Gaspar Dias and Cabo de Rama. In many parts of Goa, mansions constructed in the Indo-Portuguese style architecture still stand, though in some villages, most of them are in a dilapidated condition. Fontainhas in Panaji has been declared a cultural quarter, showcasing the life, architecture and culture of Goa. The architecture is a combination of Indian, Mughal and Portuguese styles. It has museums too; the two important are Goa State Museum and the Naval Aviation Museum. The Aviation museum is exclusive in India.

Rice is the main food crop with pulses; ragi and other food crops are also grown. Main cash crops are coconuts, cashew nuts, areca nuts, sugarcane and fruits like pineapples, mangos and bananas. Rice with fish curry is the staple diet in Goa. Its cuisine is famous for rich variety of fish dishes cooked with elaborate recipes. Pork dishes such as Vindaloo, Xacuti and Sorpotel are cooked for major occasions among Catholics. An exotic Goan vegetable stew, known as Khatkhate, is a popular dish during the celebrations of festivals for all. A rich egg-based multi-layered sweet dish known as bebinca is a favourite at Christmas. The most popular alcoholic beverage in Goa is feni; Cashew feni is made from the fermentation of the fruit of the cashew tree, while coconut feni is made from the sap of toddy palms.

Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary is situated 52 km from Panaji in the foothills of the Western Ghats in Goa. Eight square km in size, Bondla is “rather small” even by official accounts. It includes a Mini Zoo, Deer Safari Park, Formal Gardens, Botanic Gardens and a few Ecotourism Cottages.

Buddhist Pilgrimage Trip Package : 11 Nights/ 12 Days

According to Buddhist traditions, Prince Siddhartha, wandering as an ascetic, reached the sylvan banks of Falgu River, near the city of Gaya. There he sat in meditation under a bodhi tree. After three days and three nights of meditation, Siddharta attained enlightenment. He then spent seven weeks at seven different spots in the vicinity meditating and considering his experience. After seven weeks, he traveled to Sarnath, where he began teaching Buddhism. In 2002, Mahabodhi Temple, located in Bodh Gaya, became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The history of Bodh Gaya is documented by many inscriptions and pilgrimage accounts. The complex, located about 96 kilometres from Patna, contains the Mahabodhi Temple with the diamond throne (called the Vajrasana) and the holy Bodhi tree.

It is believed that 250 years after the Enlightenment of the Buddha, Emperor Asoka visited Bodh Gaya. He is considered to be the founder of the original Mahabodhi temple. Sir Alexander Cunningham as part of his work later restored the temple for the British Archaeological Society in the late 19th century.

Other Buddhist temples

At present several Buddhist temples and monasteries have been built by the people of Bhutan, China, Japan, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Tibet and Vietnam in a wide area around the temple. These buildings reflect the architectural style, exterior and interior decoration of their respective countries. The statue of Buddha in the Chinese Temple is 200 years old and was brought from China. Japan’s Nippon Temple is shaped like a pagoda. The Myanmar temple is also pagoda shaped. The Thai Temple has a typical sloping, curved roof covered with golden tiles. Inside, the temple holds a massive and spectacular bronze statue of Buddha. Next to the Thai temple there is a recent 25-meter statue of Buddha located within a garden, which has existed there for over 100 years.

There are four important cities, which are related to the life of Gautama Buddha with other three are Kushinagar, Lumbini, and Sarnath. Bodh Gaya is the place where the prince Siddhartha sat in meditation under the Bodhi Tree. It is the place where Gautam Buddha attained enlightenment and became Lord Buddha. Mahabodhi Temple of Bodh Gaya became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002.

Brief History

According to Buddhist traditions, circa 500 BC Prince Siddhartha, wandering as an ascetic, reached the sylvan banks of Falgu River, near the city of Gaya. There he sat in meditation under the Bodhi tree. After three days and three nights of meditation, Siddharta attained enlightenment. He spent seven weeks at seven different spots in the vicinity meditating. After seven weeks, he traveled to Sarnath, where he gave his first sermon about Buddhism.

Mahabodhi Temple: The complex, located about 96 kilometers from Patna contains the Mahabodhi Temple with the diamond throne and the holy Bodhi tree. This tree was originally a sapling of the Sri Maha Bodhi tree in Sri Lanka, itself grown from a sapling of the original Bodhi tree. It is believed that 250 years after the enlightenment of the Buddha, Emperor Asoka visited Bodh Gaya. He is considered to be the founder of the original Mahabodhi temple. It consists an elongated spire crowned by a miniature stupa and a chhatravali on a platform. A double flight of steps led up to the platform and the upper sanctum. The mouldings on the spire contained Buddha images in niches. Some historians believe that the temple was constructed or renovated in the 1st century during the Kushan period. With the decline of Buddhism in India, the temple was abandoned and forgotten, buried under layers of soil and sand. The temple was later restored by Sir Alexander Cunningham as part of his work for the British Archaeological Society in the late 19th century. In 1883, Cunningham along with J. D. Beglar and Dr Rajendralal Miitra painstakingly excavated the site. Extensive renovation work was carried out to restore Bodh Gaya to its former glory.

It is the main attraction of Bodhgaya town and is located near the spot where Lord Buddha attained enlightenment. It stands east to the Bodhi Tree. The Mahabodhi Temple is situated in the temple complex. The matchless design of this temple is attractive with gilded image of Lord Buddha.

Other Monasteries

There are several Buddhist temples and monasteries exist in Bodhgaya, which are constructed by the people of Bhutan, China, Japan, Myanmar, Nepal, Sikkim, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, Tibet and Vietnam. These buildings reflect the architectural style, exterior and interior decoration of their respective countries. The statue of Buddha in the Chinese Temple is 200 years old and was brought from China. Japan’s Nippon Temple is shaped like a pagoda. The Myanmar Temple is also pagoda shaped and is reminiscent of Bagan. The Thai Temple has a typical sloping, curved roof covered with golden tiles. A massive and spectacular bronze statue of Buddha exists in the temple. Next to the Thai temple there is a recent 25-meter statue of Buddha located within a garden, which has existed there for over 100 years. Tibetans build two temples.

The archeological museum of Bodhgaya is special, a must see attraction of Bodhgaya. There are various meditation courses offered around the town by many institutes. The courses are conducted in winters from October-February. Apart from Bodhgaya, there are some interesting excursions available such as Gaya, Nalanda and Rajgir.

The Bodhi Tree

At the western side of the Mahabodhi Stupa in Bodhgaya stands the large and historic Bodhi Tree under which Shakyamuni Buddha, then known as Gautama, attained enlightenment some 2540 years ago. The present Bodhi Tree is the fifth descendant of the original tree planted at this site. It still has a lot of significance for Buddhists, being revered as the actual Buddha by some enthusiasts. It is an inspiration and imprint of peace for the followers of Buddhism.

Vajrasana: Vajrasana, the stone platform is the seat of stability.

Ancient Railings: The ancient railings of 1st century BC that surround the temple are very interesting monuments.

Chankaramana : This marks the sacred spot of the Buddha’s meditative perambulation during the third week after pious enlightenment. It is believed that wherever the Buddha put his feet lotus sprang up.

Animeshlochana: It is believed that the Buddha spent one week here looking towards the Mahabodhi Tree out of gratitude, without twinkling his eyes.

Ratnagar: The Buddha spent one week here, where it is believed that five colors came out of his body.

Lotus Tank: The sacred tank where it is believed that Buddha had spent one week.

How To Reach Bodh Gaya

Air: The Patna airport is located at a distance of 112 Kms.

Rail: The nearest Railway station is Gaya Railway Station situated at a distance of 16 Kms.

Road: Bodhgaya is connected by road and Patna is 105 Kms via Jehanabad and 181 Kms via Rajgir.

Best Time to Visit

The weather of Bodhgaya is pleasant throughout the year and can be visited anytime. However, the best season to visit is winter from October to March when the climate is cool and comfortable.

Travel to India is an interesting, challenging, surprising, shocking & rewarding travel experience. A famous adage about India is ” love it or hate it, but you can never ignore it”. India travel can reveal the life from very close quarters where different shades of life are quite visible.

Contact us to book India Holidays

India is a 5000 year old civilization, equally old religion which is equipped with glorious history and rich cultural heritage. India is a place of contrasts filled with extremes in almost everything from the time you land at the airport till the time you board flight back home.

Once a couple travelers from Europe who was first timer and used our services surprised to see a lot of people on Delhi roads and got awestruck to find almost equal number of vehicles of different types in harmony along with holy cows walking and sharing the same track amicably. They asked if there is some occasion, knowing that it is not so as it is the daily feature, stunned they murmured are Indians making only babies? Our travel escort replied humorously with respect that no! Indians making space shuttles and in spare time they make babies too. This is India. It has its own way of doing things; you may only enjoy the disparity if you are mentally prepared to go with the flow. We may then assure you that this might be your life time experience which you would love to nurture.

Important : Our personalized tailor-made trips are based on an idea to allow you to decide visiting holiday destinations as per your choice and interests. The itineraries are just recommendations to give you basic inputs of possibilities so that you may plan your desired holiday accordingly, which can be tailored to suit your likes.

In case you have a particular tour yearned for years regarding India Contact Us to make it possible with our practical suggestions.

Kumbh Mela: The main and important reason for one to attend this special occasion is to take dip in the holy Ganges. It is believed that a holy dip in sacred water of The Ganges during Kumbh Mela or Ardh Kumbh Mela relieves human being out of the circle of life and death (known as Moksha).

According to the Hindu mythology, Kumbh Mela is the largest religious gathering in the world for self purification. The festival is religiously most important for the Hindus. At every Kumbh occasion, millions of tourists take part in the celebrations. International tourists along with saints, priests, and yogis from all corners of India gather to participate in Kumbh Mela. It is believed that bathing during Kumbh Mela, cures the believer of all sins and evils which leads to ones salvation.

History of Kumbh Mela: The history of Kumbh Mela originates from the beginning of the Creation. The origin of the Kumbh is very old and dates back to the time when Kalasha (pot of nectar of immortality) was recovered from Samudramanthan (during the churning of the primordial sea), for which a tense war between Devtas (Gods) and Asuras (Demons) ensued. To prevent the Amrita Kalasha being forcibly taken into possession by Asuras, who were more powerful than Devtas, its safety was entrusted to the Devtas Brahaspati, Surya, Chandra and Shani. The four Devtas ran away with the Amrita Kalasha to hide it from the Asuras. Learning the conspiracy of Devtas, Asuras turned ferocious and chased the 4 Devtas running with Amrita Kalasha. The chase, lasted 12 days and nights during which the Devtas and Asuras went round the earth and during this chase, Devtas put Amrita Kalasha at Haridwar, Prayag, Ujjain and Nasik. The Kumbh Mela is celebrated every 12 years, and Ardh Kumbh i.e Half kumbh is celebrated every 6 years.

About Ganges : The Ganges, about 2,510 km (1,560 mi) long, rises in a snowfield called The Gangotri Glacier, situated among three Himalayan mountains, each more than 6,706 m (22,000 ft) high. It flows as the Bhagirathi River from an ice cave, 3,139 m (10,300 ft) above sea level, and falls 67 m per km (350 ft per mi); around 16 km (10 mi) from the source is Gangotri. At Devaprayag, a small village, 214 km (133 mi) from the source, the Bhagirathi joins the Alaknanda to form the Ganges.

The Ganges, after descending 2,827 m (9,276 ft), at an average of around 11 m per km (60 ft per mi), flows west to the border of the plains at Haridwar, 253 km (157 mi) from its source and 312 m (1,024 ft) above sea level. From Haridwar it continues south and then south-east to Allahabad after a winding course of 785 km (488 mi). The holiest of all the rivers, the Ganges is a perennial river, which is revered by the Hindus. It is primarily mentioned in Hindu mythology. On the banks of holy Ganges babies are baptized and the dead are cremated and ashes immersed in the Ganges believing, the dead soul gets salvation from worldly life.It is medically proven that despite some visible impurities the water of Ganges do not stink even if stored for several days.

About Haridwar: Haridwar is well connected to the major cities, it lies on the National Highway and road network is good. It is a religious destination thronged by devotees throughout the year. Haridwar, the holy city lies at the foot of the Shivalik range of the Himalayas. It is very important factor that the Ganges enters plains from mountains at Haridwar.

Haridwar is one of the seven holiest places according to Hindu mythology. It is believed that the God has left its footprints in Haridwar. Moreover, it can be called the gateway to the three important Hindu pilgrimages of India in Uttrakhand named Rishikesh, Badrinath and Kedarnath, because of its key geographical location.

About Rishikesh: This is one of the most favorite destinations of north India loved by international tourists. It is around 24 kms from Haridwar. It is located in the laps of lower Himalayas, and is surrounded by scenic beauty of the hills on three sides with Holy Ganges flowing through it. The place is considered to be sacred as it is believed that meditation at this place leads to attainment of salvation. There are many temples-some ancient, some new along the river Ganges. Rishikesh is important not only as pilgrimage centre closely associated with the Ramayana, but also as home for many important centers of Hindu religious thought and spirituality, above all it is an important Yoga Centre. There are many ashrams and yoga centers. It is claimed as Yoga capital of the world. Rishikesh is an adventure sports destination famous for trekking, white water river rafting, expeditions and excursions towards the Himalayan peaks. One important feature to visit Rishikesh is that the International Yoga week, is celebrated every year, which attracts participants from all over the world, from 2nd to 7th Feb on the bank of river Ganges.

About Yoga: Yoga is a 5,000 year old scientific technique for spiritual development. It soothes one’s agitated senses and fills one with a sense of well-being. India is world-famous for its ancient knowledge of Yoga. It is an art of transforming the inert body to the level of vibrant mind in order to unite your body and mind into one with the serenity of one’s soul. Yoga helps to rejuvenate mind and soul, it helps to bring out the best in a person. It is defined as union, the union between individual existence and its source, the supreme existence. It is to make one realize one’s identity with the greater self. Yoga is a systematic science also.
