ABOUT VOLUNTEER OVERSEAS

It is pleasure to inform that our association with Saraswati Education Center started in 2009 that was established by our Varanasi affiliate Somit Dutta in 2004. He is a Yoga teacher in Varanasi by profession, but his passion to work for underprivileged children inspired him to form his charitable firm with the aim of providing free education to the poor children who are supporting their families by selling odd stuff on the banks of river Ganga at tender age. Our team, in the leadership of Somit conducts survey every six months to identify poor children residing in the nearby localities and encourage them and their families to join free education camp where volunteers educate them in the best of their capabilities. Our volunteers help us to raise funds, donations, provide their quality time and ideas to grow in the right direction. The children we target are very poor, most of them are street children, orphans, some of them doing menial works to support their extremely poor families and some of them are even in drug addiction. We welcome all of these children to our Varanasi centre.

ABOUT SOMIT

Somit Kumar Dutta is a Yoga teacher by profession who teaches yoga and spirituality. He specializes in Yoga with 12 years of experience and teaches yoga along with Ayurveda, astrology, music, Indian cuisine and language classes etc. He owns two yoga centers overseas and the name of his society is mentioned in Japanese and Korean travel guide books. Somit suffered lot of difficulties in his childhood. A son of poor parents had to sleep without food sometimes. In the face of acute poverty, his parents somehow managed to send him school. At the age of 9 years, he had to quit school as his parents were not able to pay fees along with 6 more kids of his age. That was the day when the seed of social work roped in him. Having got financial support from some charitable organization, he completed his basic education; he started to work for street children providing free education and other facilities so that he may help some tender lives to lead a life with smile.

HOW DO WE HELP VOLUNTEERING IN INDIA ?

Our center works in morning and evening shifts. Our volunteers teach poor children formal subjects such as Hindi, English, Maths, Science, General Knowledge, and moral education etc. In addition to that we provide games, drawing and various activities to make learning fun for children that are also helpful to boost their confidence and self-esteem. We operate from an informal space where we treat children as family members and assist them to learn at their own pace. Our foreign volunteers impart English speaking and etiquette lessons along with maintaining some basic hygienic practices. We also teach children about the importance of environment and make them sensitive towards the same. We do regular exercise of planting tree by the tender hands. We believe in imparting practical education where the use of books is minimized to the required level. We do also provide food to the children during education sessions from time to time and at regular intervals. We do also organize health care program where qualified doctor inspects the children every month. Our mission is to make these children self reliant so that they may lead a respectful life and grow as good human being.

It is also called Banggong co Lake. This lake is 130 km long and 5 kilometers at its widest point with half of it running to the other side of the Indo-China border. Sixty percent of the lake lies in China. The lake is 5 km wide at its broadest point. During winter the lake freezes completely, despite being saline water. This picturesque lake extends two countries and offers awesome views of the countryside in the heart of Himalayan Ranges that is known as coldest desert or the rooftop of the world. It lies at a near to the famous Chushul Mountains. The lake changes its colors with every season. It sparkles in many colorful shades of blue, green, purple, and violet etc.

Contact us for Leh Ladakh Trip

Leh to Pangong Lake is a memorable adventure trip. A 160 kilometers drive from Leh that takes around six hours. Most of the road is rough, hilly and thrilling that passes through Changla Pass, Tangste and other small villages. It begins with Thiksey village that is famous for its big monasteries ridge. The second stop is the Changla Pass, located at 17,350 feet. You may also see Shey and Thikse villages on the way to Pangong. It also crosses a river called Pagal Naala or “The Crazy Stream”. The spectacular lakeside is open during the tourist season, from May to September.

An Inner Line Permit is required to visit Pangong Lake as it lies on the Sino-Indian Line of Actual Control. Indian and foreign nationals are required to take permits to visit this lake. Trip to Pangong Lake can be done enjoying the same day excursion from Leh or you may stay one night in camp near the lake. That is as per your preference and availability of time.

Pangong Tso is in disputed territory. The Line of Actual Control passes through this lake. A section of the lake approximately 20 km east from the Line of Actual Control is controlled by China but claimed by India. The eastern end of the lake is in Tibet. The western end of the lake is not disputed. After the mid-19th century, Pangong Tso was at the southern end of the so-called Johnson Line, an early attempt at demarcation between India and China in the Aksai Chin region.

Spangmik is the small village located near the lake that is the farthest point to which foreign visitors are permitted. It is only 7 kilometers along the southern shore that offers spectacular views of the mountains of the Changchenmo range. There are the glaciers and snowcapped peaks of the Pangong range above Spagmik.

Other Attractions

While on a trip to the Pangong Lake, you can also visit the Darbuk village as an excursion point for its chain of war memorials. These memorials were made in commemoration of the soldiers who lost their lives during the Indo-China war of 1962. A few of the army bunkers and trenches are still in use.

The lake is an ideal site for bird lovers as well. Various migratory birds, including the black-necked Siberian crane, can be seen around the Mahe marshes for breeding and swarming in the cool colorful water of the lake.

In winter, one may sight great crested grebe, common merganser, brown headed gulls and majestic black-necked crane at Pangong Lake.

It is the most recently opened area of Ladakh for visitors. This valley lies at lower elevation than Leh Valley. The average altitude of the valley is about 10,000 feet above the sea level. The common way to access this valley is to travel over the Khardung La from Leh. This is the only road access to Nubra Valley, over Khardung La pass, considered as the highest motorable road in the world. Indian and foreign visitors require an Inner Line Permit to enter Nubra. Nubra Valley was the ancient trading route, connecting eastern Tibet with Turkistan via Karakoram Pass. Trip to Nubra is a trip back in time into forgotten ‘Shangri La’ that offers awesome views and wonderful experience. The mandatory inner line permit allows you to travel till Hunder and Panamik for a maximum of seven days. You have to hand over photocopies of your permit on both sides of Khardung La and by the bridge to Sumur. There are also trekkable passes over the Ladakh Range from the Indus Valley at various points.

Contact us to book Ladakh Trip

At first glance, the valley seems parched and dry, but this is prime farming land in Ladakh. It is popularly called the orchard of Ladakh. The land in Nubra produces various kinds of grains and fruits such as wheat, barley, peas, mustard, apple, walnut, apricot and even some almonds. This fertile land is nurtured by the Shyok and Nubra Rivers. Shyok River meets the Nubra or Siachan River to form a large valley that separates Ladakh and Karakoram Ranges. The Nubra River is a tributary of the Shyok River, which flows through the Nubra region of Ladakh, into the Indus River to the east of Skardu, Pakistan and the Siachen Glacier melts into this river.

Most of the Nubra Valley is inhabited by Ladakhis who speak Ladakhi; the majority of them are Buddhist, with a minority of Shia and Sunni Muslims. In the western or lowest altitude end of Nubra Valley, along the Shyok River, the inhabitants are Balti, speak Balti, and are Shia and Sufia Nurbakhshia Muslims. Visitors are not allowed beyond Hundar village that is the border area known as Balti. The beautiful village Baigdandu is also located in this area. The people in this village have distinctively different features than their typical mongoloid Ladakhi counterparts. These people possess blue eyes, auburn hairs and rosy cheeks unlike Ladakhi folks. It is believed that they were a Greek tribe who came in search of Jesus Christ’s tomb and eventually settled here. Baigdandu is also known for the Pashmina goats.

Along the Nubra or Siachan River lie the villages of Sumur, Kyagar, Tirith, Panamik and many others. Samstanling monastery is between Kyagar and Sumur villages, and Panamik is noted for its hot springs with medicinal values. On the Shyok River, the main village, Diskit, is home to the dramatically positioned Diskit Monastery. Hundar was the capital of the erstwhile Nubra kingdom in the 17th century, and is home to the Chamba Gompa. Between Hundar and Diskit lie several kilometers of sand dunes where you can see and ride double hump camels known as Bactrian camels.

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS

Diskit is nestled on the edge of a desert on the Shyok-side valley on the other side of the Khardong La. It is set amongst the rising Himalayas and offers awesome view of Leh valley. It is the administrative center of the Nubra Valley that is developed on the edge of a desert on the Shyok-side valley.

You may experience a sizzling bath at the hot springs in the outskirts of Panamik. These springs are believed to have some medicinal powers in their waters.

You can walk to the Ensa Gompa that is over 250 years old monastery. It takes around six hours to reach the hill on which it is located. It is worth visiting for the extraordinary Buddhist murals or rock engravings.

Samtanling Gompa is another famous Buddhist religious place, located at the Sumur Village. You can find out unique collection of idols, frescos and tangkhas (painted and embroidered scrolls) here. This place is ideal for camping near the Nubra River.

You can enjoy camel safari on double hump camels from Deskit to Hunder village for 2 hours. Hundar village has a small monastery and is located on the ancient Silk Route.
