Munnar beacons the adventure traveler interested in Paragliding and Trekking. Anamudi is an ideal spot for trekking. There are some of the world’s highest tea estates for nature lovers. Tata Tea Museum is a fascinating place where you can witness the entire process of tea production, its processing and tea tasting.

CSI Church: The Christ Church is an important place to visit in Munnar. The British constructed it in 1910, built of stone. This church is in old Munnar known for its stain glass windows and brass plaques or plates in memory of the tea planters.

Pothamedu (6 kms from Munnar): It has some fine plantations of tea, coffee and cardamom. These hills covered with ‘patha grass’ are breathtakingly beautiful and most suited for trekking and rock climbing.

Pallivasal (8 kms from Munnar): This matchless natural beauty and astonishing heights of human achievements can be seen at this first hydroelectric project of Kerala. A visit to this place might satiate the body and mind.

Attukad (9 kms from Munnar): It is situated amidst the misty mountains on the way from Munnar to Pallivasal. It is an ideal place for long treks. Cascading waterfalls, rolling hills and wooded valleys are quite enchanting.

Devikulam Lake: This is an ideal spot to unwind and relax situated 7 kms from Munnar consists landscape, forests and tea plantations. You may enjoy angling in the lake also.

Chithirapuram (10 kms from Munnar): It is a quaint charming town 10 kms from Munnar dotted with beautiful cottages, bungalows and tea plantations.

Nyamakad (10 kms from Munnar): It is a picturesque spot with many captivating waterfalls in its environs. It is situated on the way to Rajamala from Munnar is another paradise of woodlands and waterfalls. It consists of perennial waterfalls and refreshing greenery.

Mattupeety Lake (13 km from Munnar): It is one of the major tourist attractions around Munnar. It is situated at a distance of, was created by a small hydro electricity dam that is flanked by steep hills and woods. You could also opt for activities like boating and horse riding here. The forest in and around Mattupetty is ideal for trekking and bird watching.

Indo Swiss Dairy Farm: It is situated in the close vicinity of Mattupetty Lake. You may check out the Indo-Swiss cattle-breeding centre cum dairy project; taking care of over 100 varieties of high yielding cattle is one of the largest ventures in India, where you can see varieties of cattle and beautiful rose garden. Echo Point offers panoramic view and the thrill of hearing echo of your voice.

Lock Heart Gap (13 km from Munnar): The panoramic view of Bison valley and other sleepy little villages below thousand feets enveloped in mist most of the time, on one side and steep rocky slopes with abundant wild flowers on the other side make this stretch an incredible experience. Lock Heart Gap is ideal for trekking and outdoor exploration. It’s the perfect place to soak in some fresh mountain air and catch captivating views.

Anamudi (15 kms from Munnar): Situated at an alititude of 2695 metres is the highest peak in southern India, can be viewed from Munnar. It is ideal for mountaineering, adventure activities and research projects of rare plants. The famous peak of Anamudi, rich in its varied species of flora and fauna, is another favourite of trekkers, but needs some experience in this field.

Eravikulam National Park (17 km from Munnar): This national park covers an area of 97 sq kms surrounded by placid lake, mountains, grasslands, fascinating flowers and rare endangered animals are main attractions of this national park. It lies in the Rajamalai hills and is home to the endangered Nilgiri Tahr, a mountain goat. Rajamalai Wildlife Sanctuary is situated two kilometers away from this park consists of species of animals. Anamudi, the highest peak in South India (2695 Mtrs) is a part of the park.

Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary or Thattekad Sanctuary is a bird watcher’s paradise located on the riverbanks of Periyar. It was nurtured and maintained by renowned Dr. Salim Ali.  It is home to more than 270 species of rare birds such as mottled wood owl, spot-bellied eagle owl, Malayan night heron, Sri Lanka frogmouth and rusty-tailed flycatcher etc.

Power House Waterfalls (17 kms from Munnar): It is situated on the way to Thekkady. There is a lovely waterfall, which emanates from the legendary ‘Sita Devi Kulam’ near Devikulam gushes down a steep cliff 2000 m high. It is an ideal place to take a break on the way to Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. The visitors to the waterfalls believe in the medicinal and curing powers of this water.

Best Time to Visit Munnar

Munnar has cool weather through the year. In summer you need to carry some light woolens. In winters, you should carry enough warm clothing; temperature drops to five degree Celsius. Munnar can be visited anytime of the year besides the monsoons that last from June to September.

There are no special local handicrafts items of souvenirs that you may buy. The hill resort is renowned for its tea gardens. There are several shops, factories and outlets to buy the tealeaves. The tealeaves of Munnar have special flavor and taste. A must buy for the tea connoisseurs.
