Naini Lake: Nainital has this exquisite lake. The Naini Lake is surrounded by seven hills that are dotted with cottages and villas. The reflection of hills in the lake is awesome. It looks even better in the night. The lake offers facilities yachting and boating. The north end of lake is called Malli Tal while the southern one is called Talli Tal, which have a bridge that has Mahatma Gandhi’s statue and post office. It is the only Post Office on the lake bridge in the world. There are shopping centers, stores and shops on sides of the bride.

The Mall: The Mall road is situated on the side of Naini Lake that is renamed Govind Ballabh Pant Marg. It is a main city center well equipped with facilities. In summers (May & June), this is closed for traffic in the evening to facilitate strolling, which is the tourist attraction at The Mall. This road connects with Malli Tal and Talli Tal.

The Flatts: The Flats has playing ground used for sports and cultural activities during festivals. It is situated on the northern side of Naini Lake that is a get together place for people and it is very crowed in the evening. This consists a statue of Pt. Govind Ballabh Pant and a beautiful fountain. There are bandstand, Chat Bazar and Bhotia Market in the flats. There are religious places as a Mosque, Gurudwara and Naina Devi temple besides Rink theatre, which is used for roller-skating. The recreation centers include new club, Boat House club, Masonic Hall in the periphery of the flats. The Govind Ballabh Pant High Altitude Zoo is located at one km away from bus stand at an altitude of 2100 meters. The zoo remains closed for visitors on Mondays and major holidays.

Aerial Ropeway: It is one of the main attractions of Nainital. This ropeway connects Snow-View Point (at 2270 Mts.) with Nainital. It starts at Malli Tal and takes approx. 152 seconds to cover one-way journey by trolley. The capacity of the cabin is 825 kgs.

Horse Riding: It is important attraction for Nainital tourists. The horses are hired at Barapatthar to visit the different peaks of the city. At present Horse Riding is strictly banned inside the city.

Raj Bhavan (Governor’s House): The British built it as the residence of Governor of North West Province in Raj Era. At present it is the official accommodation of Governor of the state. This magnificent building consists beautiful garden, Golf Links, Swimming Pool, Jhandidhar Modi Heights and Munshi heights. The Governor’s House was built in the line of Buckingham Palace having double storied 113 rooms. This can be visited only with prior permission.

Caves Garden: The Caves Garden is the latest addition in the list of existing tourist spots in Nainital city. It is located in Sukha Tal approximately one km away from Malli Tal close to Kumaun University Campus.

Hanuman Garhi: It is a religious place that is renowned for the view of beautiful sun set.  The temple complex presides Lord Hanuman. It is located at an altitude of 1951 Mts. It can be approached by car and bus; some of the pilgrims prefer to visit here on foot. There is Shitala Devi temple and Ashram of Lila Shah Bapu is situated on the other side of the hill.

Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES): It is a center of astronomical studies and optical tracking of artificial satellites. This observatory was established in 1955 that was shifted to the current location named Manora Peak in 1961. The objective of the observatory has been to develop facilities for modern astrophysical research in stellar, solar & theoretical branches of astrophysics. You may enjoy celestial objects through the telescopes in clear nights on fixed selected days with permission. It is located on Manora peak at a distance of around one km from Hanumangarhi.  It is around 9 kms away from the city.

Snow View: Snow view as the name suggests offers an amazingly beautiful snow point of Himalayas. It is an easily accessible hilltop at an altitude of 2270 meters. It is hardly 3 kms away from the city center. It is also accessible through ropeway and connected through motorable road.

Naina Peak / China Peak: It is the highest peak of Nainital that is located at an altitude of 2611 meters and at a distance of 6kms from the city center. You may view sparkling snow laden Himalayas from Bandar Punch in West and Api, Nari peaks of Nepal in the East.  A quality pair of binoculars is recommended to the visitors. You may hire pones to from Snow View or Malli Tal to visit this peak.

Lands End: The best feature of this spot is that as the name suggests you might feel that it is the end of the land without climbing enough. It is situated at an altitude of 2118 meters and 4 kms away from the city center. At this point you can view the neighboring hills and valley besides Khurpatal Lake.

Tiffin Top & Dorothy Seat: Tiffin Top is an excellent view of the Himalayas and neighboring countryside. It is a picnic spot that is located at an altitude of 2292 meters, just four kilometers away from the city center. Dorothy seat is a memorial build by a loving husband in the memory of her English painter wife Dorothy Kellet after her demise. These two sights are at a close proximity.

Kilbury: It is an ideal spot for a quiet and peaceful holiday that is situated at an altitude of 2194 meters and 10 kms away from the city. It is accessible by the motorable road. There is a forest rest house for night stay.

Nainital Climate: It is colder than the rest of the hilly tract of Kumaon region. It has damp climate and gets heavy rainfall during monsoon. The neighboring Almora and Ranikhet are warmer comparatively. Humidity in Nainital is less than the other hill towns. The temperature ranges between 28 and 7 degrees.

Nainital: How to Reach?

By Train: Kathgodam is the nearest rail station that is 35 Kms. away from Nainital. Having arrived at Kathgodam Railway station the tourist can hire Taxi or Bus to reach Nainita. Taxis are available on shared seat basis at the station. Most of the buses start from Haldwani roadways bus stand.

By Car: A private taxi can be hired from Delhi to visit Nainital.

Nainital Climate

The winter starts at Nainital in late October till March. December and January are extreme, snowfall might also occur in this period. April to June and October is the pleasant time to visit. It rains very heavily from late June to September.

Nainital Clothing

It is recommended to carry heavy woolens in winters and light woolens in summers. Raincoat and umbrella are highly recommended during rainy season.

Nainital Excursions

Bhowali: It is famous for its scenic beauty, hill fruit mart and T.B. sanatorium, established in 1912. It is located at an altitude of 1706 meters above the sea level and 11 kms away from the city.

Ghorakhal: It is known for the temple of Lord Golu, local God worshipped by locals.

Sat Tal: It is a unique, amazing spot having lakes placed amidst the oak forest. There are Nal Damyanti Lake, Panna Lake, Garude Lake, Ram Lake, Laxman Lake and Sita Lake. Besides the ashram of an American Missionary, Stanley Johns. It is situated at an altitude of 1370 meters and 23 kms away from Nainital.

Bhimtal: There is a beautiful lake that offers awesome vistas. This lake is bigger than Naini Lake. You may enjoy boating in this lake and visit beautiful aquarium in an island that is located at a distance of 91 meters from the shore amid the lake. There is a 17th century Bhimeshwar temple complex along the 40 feet high dam. It is around 22 kms away from Nainital.

Naukuchia Tal: It is a beautiful deep clean lake with nine corners. Its length is 983 meters breadth is 693 meters and depth 40.3 meters. It is situated 26 kms away from Nainital and 4 kms away from Bhimtal at an altitude of 1220 meters above the sea level. You may enjoy this enchanting valley by angling and bird watching besides rowing and paddling / yachting.

Mukteshwar: The British developed it as research and education institute (IVRI) in 1893. Fruit orchards and thick coniferous forest surround this place. It is a beautiful scenic spot overlooking long ranges of Himalayas. It is located at an altitude of 2286 meters that is 51 kms away from Nainital. There is an ancient temple of Lord Shiva exists on the top of the rock.

Ranikhet: As per the legend this place had won the heart of Rani Padmini, queen of Raja Sudhardev. Having mesmerized from this beautiful place she decided to make this place her abode. Since then this place is known as Ranikhet, literally means “Queen’s Field”. It is an exotic hill station with majestic pine trees. It is situated 60 kms from Nainital at an altitude of 1829 meters above sea level. You may visit Ranikhet throughout the year. A visit to KRC museum and memorial is worth visiting. The following sites can be visited during stay at Ranikhet.

Upat Kalika: It has one of the best mountain golf links (9 Holes) in India that is surrounded by dense forests 6 kms away from Ranikhet and Klalika is just one km away from Upat. Kalika has a famous temple.

Chaubatiya Garden: It has fruit gardens and Government Fruit Research Center. It is situated 10 kms away from Ranikhet.

Bhalu Dam: It is famous for fishing located 3 kms away from Chaubatiya.

Hairakhan Dham : It is the ashram of Hairakhan Baba that is located 5 kms away from Ranikhet.

Kausani: It is an ideal place to enjoy quiet, relaxed and pollution free holidays in the lap of nature. It is nestled among dense pine forests with a narrow ridge that is separated from the mountains of the Nanda Devi range. You may view the snow covered Trishul and Nanda Devi quite clearly. You might feel that the snow is within your touching distance. The sunrise is awesome with 300 kms wide view of the Himalayan range attracts visitors to this enchanting place. Mahatma Gandhi spent 12 days in 1929 at Kausani and penned his memorable commentary on Geeta Anashakti Yoga and his staying guesthouse is known as the Anashakti Ashram atv present. A famous Hindi poet laureate Sumitra Nandan Pant was born at Kausani.

Baijnath: There are 13th century ancient temples of Hindu Gods in Baijnath.The temple complex of Baijnath was constructed by the Katyuri kings.  It is located at an elevation of 1125 meters that is 19 kms away from Kausani on the way to Bageshwar. It is situated on the banks of Gomti River in the flat valley.

Jageshwar: It is situated around 100 kms from Nainital and one among the 12 Jyotirlings in India. It is located in a beautiful narrow valley hedged by deodars. There are scores of shrines but three out of these are simply outstanding sculptures. Although the presiding deity at Jageshwar is Lord Shiva yet a strong Buddhist influence is also visible in the carvings.

Binsar: It is one of the most scenic attractions in the Himalayas that is renowned for the mesmerizing views of The Himalayas. It is situated at a distance of 95 kms away from Nainital, at an elevation of 2412 meters and offers an excellent view of hills. This Himalaya beauty is surrounded by Alpine flora, ferns, hanging moss and flowers. It offers a 300 kms stretch of famous peaks which includes Kedranath, Chaukhamba, Trishul, Nandadevi, Nandakot and Pachachuli. The forests of Himalayan Oak and rhobodendron are excellent for trekking.
